Have you ever used a peer-to-peer network? Made a mix tape? Sung "Happy Birthday"? All of these are counter to current copyright laws in North America which are the target of Brett Gaylor's documentary, RiP! A Remix Manifesto.
Filmed in the style of The Corporation, Gaylor, true to his manifesto, mixes and remixes interviews, stock footage, and user contributed footage into a slick condemnation of current copyright laws. Gaylor calls for a revolution as he points out the ridiculous levels to which a handful of corporations have risen in order to protect their interests.
The central figure in the film is a mashup artist known as Girl Talk but Gaylor also looks at the impact of "radical" protesters from the Mouse Liberation Front and Negativeland to Radiohead and Brazil's baile funk music scene.
The most amazing thing about RiP! is that it is still evolving. Even now, viewers are encouraged to take the footage and remix it, add content, rework it, comment on it and upload it to be considered for future versions of the film.
A DVD version is slated for a June 2009 release but it is still screening in theatres and at festivals around the world or you can see it online at NFB.ca. |
