Da Introduction:
"Get Ready to Kick Some @$$!!"
Ratchet and Clank are back and this time they've gone commando! Get ready for the ride of your life as you blast your way through countless leaving a path of total destruction in your wake! In this adventure you'll not only enjoy the classic destruction from their first adventure, you'll enjoy a new feature that'll have you annihilating everything you can - the more you destroy the stronger you get and the bigger the weapons get. And you know the bigger the better! However, it'll take more than big guns to finish this one - ya up for it?
Da Graphics:
Graphics here are simply great! As I battled through the game I found myself stopping to smell the roses......just a quick look around to take it all in. The animators did a fine job of portraying all sorts of surroundings from futuristic cityscapes to marshy swamps you'll be impressed by the smooth textures, accurate lighting and resulting shadows - just great! The enemies you'll encounter are quite intriguing too. Again I found myself drawn in to get a closer look....oops ;) Overall the graphics are very well done and give just the affect they need to in a great game!
Da Sound:
Awesome and fun! My favourites are the explosions and the proceeding "clank clank" of you collecting your bolts. In surround sound this baby cooks! Even my little 2 speaker system rocked the house every time I dropped a mini-nuke. Like any good stereo sound configuration would, Going Commando does a good job using sound to direct and guide you - you can hear your enemies as they approach from either side or behind you.....at time this can be a bit creepy as you get surrounded.
The attention to detail in the sound really adds to the overall game experience and this one misses little detail. The sounds your feet will make on the ground as you run vary depending on the type of ground you're running on. Each weapon has a distinct sound, which is impressive because there are so many cool weapons. Your surroundings emit various sounds that are not even part of the action but add to the authenticity of the battle surroundings. Overall the sound in this one enhances the gaming experience and is guaranteed to impress.
Da Gameplay:
Nice and easy - love it!! Just pick up the controller and start rockin'. When you start you'll be directed through the first level as a tutorial on how to control your weapons and basic movements. Like most other games these days the tutorial is quite good - both simple and challenging which allows you to familiarize yourself with some basic controls before plunging headlong into the game.
Once you've got the basics done you'll get to begin your quest. If you missed out on the first one then you'll really love the cool moves and weapons in this game. Ratchet doesn't climb things, just jumps from rung to rung or ledge to ledge.....and jumping long distances is a hoot with the jet pack! Flip through your weapons and choose how to destroy your target - from gravity bombs to mini-nukes to multiple missle launchers the chaos only gets better! Some levels will require some serious skill over straight violence which is a nice addition to the chaotic adventure. The game still makes you think a little while you make your way through the endless levels.
The weapons in the game are absolutely awesome. The best part is the automatic upgrades. Yup - use a weapon lots and you'll eventually be upgraded to the next version of that weapon. This of course allows you to inflict even more chaos and destruction which in turn will cause another upgrade, and so on and so on....wicked!!
Camera angles and such are great - you have full 360 degree visibility which is crucial in most games these days. Although you can look everywhere the game ensures you can't travel where you aren't supposed to - in other words, anywhere you can get to is meant to be gotten to. The game leads you through the levels by defining your path quite plainly. I love this feature - without it you can find yourself getting lost inside levels wandering aimlessly about trying to find the exit. Thankfully this is not the case with Going Commando.
Da Conclusion:
Going Commando quite simply rocks! This ass-kickin' adventure will have you at the edge of your seat for hours and hours. Once you start this one you'll have a hard time putting it down - I found myself playing longer just to see the next weapon upgrade I'd get - it's like Christmas all over again! Regardless of whether or not you played the first Ratchet & Clank, if you're interested in a fun, challenging game you should definitely "Go Commando." This is certainly a game that every PS2 owner wants to have in their collection - I highly recommend you snatch one up now before they're hard to come by ;)
