There seems to be a big retro thing going on. A lot of the
classic games are making comebacks. These games like
Centipede, Frogger, Asteroids, and so on were the big draw
at the local arcade way back when. These re-vamped games
have stayed in step with all the new innovations in the gaming industry such as, 3d graphics and stereo sound.
Centipede has managed this transition period very well.
Some things should stay in the 1980s like The Love Boat,
polyester, and a list too large to type here. Not so with
Centipede.
The game offers the ability to play in the traditional Arcade mode or the new mission based Adventure
mode. I found the arcade mode to be quite enjoyable; it?s definitely worth playing that way for awhile.
If you are younger and don?t remember the game from the 80s you might be a little disappointed with the arcade mode. But for those of us who do, and there are a lot of us, then it's like putting on those old jeans in the closet and finding out they fit. Everything old is new again.
Adventure mode is where the real action is. Complete with a
whole new story. It seems every 100 hundred years the
Queen centipede awakes from her sleep and is really pissed.
All she wants to do is lead the local insect population on a
rampage and wipe out all the little people. Remember this all takes place where people are no bigger than ants and
mushrooms are the size of trees. So all the little people can do in the face of the bug onslaught is to run around with their hands in the air and cry for help. Somehow you?ve been dragged out of bed to save the world, nothing like the
reluctant hero eh? And you have to pick them up as they are running around! They do give you a really cool vehicle to do it in though. It's called the Shooter, when you drive this gun on wheelsn you basically can blast everything in your way. It is very maneuverable and agile so don?t try and control it with a heavy hand. There are lots of power-ups in the game, to make you shoot faster, harder and defend
better.
To win the game you have to travel through 5 unique 3d worlds, they are Weedom, Frostonia,Infurnium, Enigma and E-Vile. The worlds are filled with a whole lot of bugs that still haven?t got over that can of raid thing. So be careful the further you go in the levels the tougher they are to defeat. My favorite was Weedom. The final goal is to make it to the Centipede temple and defeat the Queen centipede. Don?t forget to pick up as many stranded wee people as you can during the game.
Parents if you are looking for a game that is suitable for
everybody in the family then I suggest you take a good look
at this game. Chances are you remember the game but your
kids might not. There is no graphic depictions of violence
within the game and the story is very tame.
I give this game a fun filled, family approved, Joystick up.
