Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller Episode 2: The Wise Monkey

Platform: iPhone/iPod
Category: Adventure

The Wise Monkey is the second episode of Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller by Phoenix Online Studios. It's the thrilling follow up to The Hangman and jumps right into the action. The first one was incredibly engaging, and this episode is even more so, upping the ante right away. If you've never played the first episode, you should read my review of it here. Because most of the presentation and gameplay is the same, I'll skip going into detail.

The art style and music are the same as in the last episode. I really love the gorgeous backgrounds to the scenes. The game has a dark feel with good use of color to highlight. Like the previous episode, The Wise Monkey also suffers from some clipping and weird texture problems, especially on close up views of people. Facial expressions are odd too sometimes, and there were a couple errors with text, such as spaces missing. It's too bad this isn't perfect, but I strongly suggest you overlook these minor problems. Cognition has a thrilling, gripping narrative. The problems with the presentation, while noticeable, do not pose a gameplay problem or get in the way of the story.

Gameplay and Story

The Wise Monkey introduces a new power for Erica - synergy. She can use this on combinations of items to see a memory related to them, and it works well in the game.

The story continues from where we left off in The Hangman. Honestly, I forgot a little of what happened and had to stop to piece it together verbally. (It helps that I was playing with someone who was there when I played the first episode as well.) Luckily, Phoenix Online Studios thought of this and created a video to summarize the story from the first episode. I'll add here that in my opinion, you'll be really missing out if you watch that before playing the first episode. Go get it if you haven't!

I don't want to spoil the first episode in case you're reading this but haven't played it, but The Wise Monkey starts with the FBI out to find the killer of the murdered woman from the end of the last episode. Of course, this is personal for many of them. In addition, one of the important characters from the first episode is taken by a serial killer almost immediately. I wasn't expecting so much action so quickly, and I definitely wasn't expecting that to happen to a character whom I really liked. It was an extremely exciting scene and made me pumped to keep playing.

If you've played the first episode, you should know what to expect. The Wise Monkey doesn't need to get you acclimated. You know the gameplay, and you know the characters. This time you can plunge into the action, intrigue, detective work, and puzzles. The Wise Monkey is currently $3.99 on the iTunes App Store and definitely worth it.
