Get out your sniper helmets. The dark comedic adventure continues! MKD2 Armageddon for the PS2 is looking mighty fine, and if you're a fan of the original series and you own a PS2, this game will be a must have. Kurt the hero, the robotic gun toting dog Max, and the eccentric Dr. Hawkins are back to save the world in this sequel which takes off right after the PSone version ends. While Bioware's transformation of MDK2 Armageddon onto the PS2 contains the same basic elements of the DC and PC versions, PS2 owners will be happy to know they're getting some special treatment in this version of the hit title. These changes include modified puzzles, different creature placement and structural changes in some of the levels including larger rooms. There will also be adjustable difficulty settings, numerous control options, dual analog control support, outdoor environments and your enemies will have stronger AI. Oh, did I mention the graphical enhancements due to the PS2's processing power?
Like the DC and PC versions of MDK2, in the PS2 version you get to play 3 different characters, each one having special missions throughout the game. All three quirky characters, Kurt, Max and Dr. Hawkins, have unique weapons and abilities which creates a different gaming experience with each new level. The ever useful sniper mode is back, and Kurt's amazing suit gives him new stealth abilities with a cloaking device. Then there's the cool ribbon chute that lets Kurt float or glide to places he needs to go. While playing Max get set to rip and roar through your enemies with shear fire power, and as Dr. Hawkins your focus is more on solving puzzles. There's enough variety here to keep you high.
The graphics in MDK2 for the PS2 are astonishing. Evident in the preview build Interplay sent us are fast frames running between 30 and 60fps, even in larger areas. The visuals are beefed up from the DC version with higher resolutions showing a crisp, clear picture and the color palette contains a wider range of vibrant colors. Monsters are also bigger and modeled with more detail. The graphics are looking sweet.
A factor that hampered the DC version of the game were its controls. Bioware addresses this problem in the PS2 version and they've done their best to make it easier to control the game with the Dual Shock setup. Movement is activated with the D-pad of left stick while the right stick controls your camera, which give you complete rotation around your character in all directions. You can zoom, strafe and jump with relative ease. There is a ton of freedom for movement with the PS2's control set-up. Getting into the game is fairly basic, and the tutorial at the beginning of the first mission will have you kicking butt in no time.
MDK2 for the PS2 will outshine previous versions on other systems. With beefed up graphics, better control and level changes, Armageddon for the PS2 will be a definite buy for anyone who owns Sony's next gen system.
