Magnetic Sports Soccer, provided to me by Bulkypix and Revo Solutions, is a soccer game with an arcade feel. You don't manage a team or trade players in Magnetic Sports Soccer; rather, you focus on the fun of launching balls from unmoving players, using the magnetic pull of other players to guide your ball toward the goal.
Each side has a goalie and three players. When one of your players has the ball, you touch the screen to begin to shoot. The farther you pull back, the more powerfully you'll launch the ball. Moving your finger up and down will aim the ball. I found it easiest to press my finger to the player with the ball so it felt like I was pulling back a spring-loaded player, but you can actually touch anywhere. Each player has a magnetic pull on the ball. To get good at Magnetic Sports Soccer you have to master the ability to shoot the ball near other players, allowing their magnetic pull to change the trajectory of the ball. When the other team has the ball, you can slide your goalie back and forth. The goalie will move toward the ball automatically but not fast enough to reach it if you predicted incorrectly from which side the goal would come. The opposing goalie appears stationary when you have the ball, leaving you guessing where he'll be waiting. As the game progresses, a tilt meter on the right of the screen slowly fills. When full, you can shake the iPhone to cause a tilt, jolting the ball from it's current location.
The graphics in Magnetic Sports Soccer look good. The players are rendered in 3D, and there are three camera views. The default view follows the ball, placing the camera directly behind the player who has the ball. This view looks the best. I found the second view to be the easiest to use - the overhead view. This lets you see the entire game at once and makes lining up shots easier. Of course, this view doesn't show off the 3D players as well. The third view puts the camera behind the goalie, which I never found helpful. The sound effects are pleasant and make it seem like you're really playing with spring-loaded figures. By default there isn't any music in the game. In its place you can hear the crowd cheering and yelling while you play. However, Magnetic Sports Soccer gives you the ability to play your own music. From the options screen before starting the game you can add music that you'd like to play from your iPod library. After you start playing, you can control the music from the pause screen.
Magnetic Sports Soccer uses OpenFeint, the cross-game network that consists of leaderboards, chat, achievements, and more. The categories in the leaderboards for this game are rather strange and noncompetitive. They include goals scored, playtime, and matches played. All the categories basically rate how much someone plays, not how skilled someone is. There are a variety of achievements such as "Cheetah speed - score a goal shooting in 2 seconds after catching the ball" and "Pool shark - Score a goal by using the walls for reflection." When you receive an achievement, a notification appears on the bottom of the screen. Clicking it brings you to the achievement screen. Unfortunately, clicking the notification does not pause the game. Hopefully this will be fixed in a later update.
Single player consists of two modes - Quick Match and Challenge. In Quick Match, you can set whether you want to have a goal or time limited game and what that limit is. There are two arenas from which to choose and multiple difficulty settings. Challenge mode requires you to play a consecutive series of games. To continue you must win, but if you lose, you simple have to replay that match.
There are four ways to play Magnetic Sports Soccer multiplayer. These are by sharing a single device, playing over a local Wi-Fi network, playing over Bluetooth, and playing online. It's nice to see this many options. I don't often run into other iPhone users with the same games as me. As such, offering a multiplayer mode in which players share a single device is a very nice feature.
Magnetic Sports Soccer is a very fun game to play when you have a few minutes of free time and is priced very reasonably at $0.99 (US). The achievements add an extra incentive that I enjoy but can be ignored if you're not interested. The many multiplayer options provided are sure to please everyone, and the shared device option certainly pleases me. If you want a pocket-sized soccer game with an arcade feel, definitely try Magnetic Sports Soccer.
