Well Ratchet & Clank fans, Ratchet is back and better than ever in his newest game. As always Sony has supplied a great new installment to what I see as a timeless series. In this riveting Shooter/Action/RPG hybrid Ratchet finds himself captured by the major the business tycoon Gleeman Vox. Mr.Vox is the proud owner of a holovision program and he has a specific goal: to pit heroes against each other in ring matches and sell his crappy merchandise. Now Ratchet and friends must escape the dread zone...or else.

Graphics As many games the graphics aren’t perfect, but Ratchet: Deadlocked I found them very well done in detail, colour, lighting, and textures. I love the way Clank moves his eyes and mouth because it’s just so realistic. The many terrains throughout the various worlds are expertly done as well. After all, without the realistic graphics of deathtraps and enemies, you just wouldn’t get that “I’m going to die!” feel to the game. For those with the higher end displays this game supports Widescreen and progressive scan too. I didn't play on such a display unit, but if my gameplay on a regular T.V. is any indication it should look darn good on a progressive scan T.V. Another feature worth mentioning is the different skins Ratchet can equip as they look cool. Some of these skins for Ratchet are free off the get-go and some are eventually unlocked, but most are bought with star points. Also, early in the game, Ratchet will attain two battlebots named Merc & Green. As the game advances all will have bot upgrades that you can purchase. Most of these are camouflage patterns and head parts with which a player can customize on said bots. This, along with the skins & cheats, make the graphics even more pleasant to look at. All together I found the grapics most enjoyable and I am impressed with its quality on what is becoming an aging system. Sounds Ratchet Deadlocked has some of the coolest action music I’ve heard from an game in awhile. Insomniac seems to have a gift to add the right sounds when it’s needed most. In a critical situation Deadlocked plays a serious beat without driving you crazy with repetitiveness. In a calm situation it is less intense but still maintains a spacey beat. The sound effects themselves are also really well done. When your shooting the various guns and weapons the effects blend excellently with its destructive counterpart. Nothing brings me more joy than the sound of dual raptor guns shredding the armor of a robot. Another feature I found awesome was that you never needed subtitles (although it had that option). Every character had their own voice that matched up perfectly with their lip movements. All in all this marvelous mix of sounds blew me away. Gameplay This is one of the best shooter/action/RPG’s for the PS2 I’ve ever played. The replay-value alone makes the game worth buying. In this adventure, Ratchet, Clank and Al are abducted by Gleeman Vox’s robots which took them deep within the shadow sector. Now Ratchet & the gang must find a way to remove their restraint collars and survive Gleeman Vox’s twisted holovision show, the Dread zone. This is a place where heroes must fight for their lives just so Mr.Vox can sell his crappy merchandise. Things are looking pretty grim for Ratchet & friends. Okay, that’s the bad news, but the good news is that Ratchet is given cool new armor, awesome new upgradable weapons, and two Battlebots named Merc & Green that obey his every order! I thought the idea of having two battlebots would be great and I was right! They hack computer orbs, turn control nobs, fire grind cables and more. The best feature was that the controls were easy to use and understand. The battlebots can be destroyed, but by pressing down on the D-pad you can easily revive them. I found Merc & Green to be an excellent addition to the game and are really funny to listen to as well. Another feature of Ratchet Deadlocked was the different skins and cheats which I briefly touched on in the graphics section of this review. Among these is the “gangsta guns” cheat which makes Ratchet hold his guns in a really cool way. Speaking of guns, Ratchet has a brand-spanking new arsenal of chaos inducing weapons. Mr. Vox on the other hand has a unique system integrated into his weapons as the more you use them the more powerful they become. Also, in gladiator mode, you can purchase the mega version of the weapon if it has reached level 10. This makes replaying the game so much more interesting. I would like to touch on the vast enviroment of the many planets Ratchet must endure. Insomniac has done a great job processing the many stages Ratchet must survive. The textures and vibrence of colours simulate the terrain perfectly. But the danger never ends in dread zone, no matter how cool the environment is so you mut be aware of changing platforms and incoming enemies at all times. So remember that nothing is safe in the dread zone and be on guard when you play this game. Multiplayer is also a major focus of Ratchet: Deadlocked. This latest entry into the series is online capable but it only supports broadband. The reason for this is that players can use USB headset and keyboard for communication while playing with other gamers and the large amount of players that can do this eats up bandwidth. Multiplayer modes available this time around include Deathmatch and Capture the Flag, which are the same last year’s version of Ratchet. New modes include King of the Hill, where you keep yourself in the glowing area longest, Juggernaut, where one player is shielded and super powerful while everyone else must take him down, and finally, Conquest, which is a variation on the Siege mode from last year, where you must capture nodes for an overall point total. I did not get a chance to try the robust online mode, so it is unfair for me to comment on it. Conclusion Well I’ve gathered the facts, did the research, and analized the data. What was my conclusion? Ratchet Deadlocked is totally awesome! I enjoyed evry minute of the game. I will surely be playing it again and again. The best part is that it’s a game that can make you laugh. It’s a great game and I know you’ll enjoy it. Happy gaming!
